Sexual assault allegations surrounding comatose nursing home resident's pregnancy

It has been reported that a 29-year-old woman who has been residing in a nursing home in Arizona and in a vegetative, comatose state for 10 years, became pregnant and gave birth while in the vegetative state. This has justifiably provoked allegations of sexual assault and abuse and serious concerns of over resident safety in nursing homes. Police reportedly served a search warrant to take DNA samples from male staff members at the facility.

Many nursing home residents are mentally or cognitively impaired and are some of our society's most vulnerable and dependent citizens. Parties with knowledge of the incident have commented that it appears that one of her caretakers took advantage of this vulnerable nursing home resident.

The chief executive of the nursing home company, Hacienda Healthcare, at issue resigned this week. The nursing home previously received ratings of "below average" and "much believe average" from Medicare in terms of resident care.
