It was reported that the Rehabilitation Center at Hollywood Hills, a nursing home in Florida, lost power to the air conditioning/cooling system in the nursing facility during Hurricane Irma. The New York Times reported that, even though state and federal regulations require nursing home residents to be evacuated if it gets too hot inside, the nursing home failed to timely evacuate, and eight residents died.
The local police department, as well as the state's attorney general's office, are investigating the deaths of these elderly nursing home residents.
The question remains as to why the nursing home did not have back-up power in case of such an emergency, such as a generator. It was reported that the facility was cited by regulators previously for failing to have necessary backup power capability.
Mistreatment, abuse and neglect of nursing home residents should not be tolerated and and must not be "swept under the rug". Visitors to the nursing home must speak up and report any unsafe conditions to the nursing home's administrator and to the appropriate government department or regulator.
