Class-action lawsuits were recently filed against Sentosa Care nursing homes Bay Park Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in the Bronx and Brooklyn-based Seagate Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, concerning allegations that inadequate nursing staffing at the homes caused infections, unsanitary conditions and overall inadequate care in violation of state and federal law. It was alleged that staffing data and inspection reports from Medicare confirmed the conditions and treatment at these nursing homes.
A longtime employee of Bay Park Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation reportedly confirmed the insufficient staffing at the nursing home, and stated that lack of nursing staff can lead to bed sores, also known as pressure sores or decubitus ulcers.

In other news, New York State recently affirmed ten new nursing home operator licenses to owners/operators who had been fined for providing poor care at other nursing homes (more HERE). There is a real concern that the state is failing to properly vet those in charge of the care of our most vulnerable citizens, the elderly and disabled. Apparently, while the operators had a history of being fined by the state for failure to provide adequate nursing care, the state Health Department concluded that it had received no negative information about the character and competence of the new owners.
